Artists
in the 20th Century became fascinated with technology and machines
as the symbol of the modern era. Technology was seen as liberator
and oppressor with the power to free humanity or enslave us. Often
it was shown as an alienating and anti-human force, others saw it
as the means to self-expression and personal empowerment. Almost
every major school of art devoted as least some of their intense
gaze at these relationships. French Cubism, Italian Futurism, American
Realism, English Modernism, Soviet Constructists, Mexican Muralists,
even the Surrealists, all took turns at exploring humanity's relationship
to technology, and each individual artist in turn had his or her
own vision. Today computer technology is transforming how art is
done and how it looks.
CyRev offers
a look at these efforts to define our relationship to technology
through the medium of art. Over time we will continue to expand
this section of CyRev for an ever broader view of art and technology. |
