Ingo Schmidt
Biography:
Dr. Schmidt is a Research Associate at the Centre for Global Political
Economy, Simon Fraser University in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada.
Lecture Topics:
-
Political Economy of European Integration
Work in this field focuses on the question in as much European integration
is used as a means to dismantle welfares states in Europe. Moreover
the question is raised whether European integration paves the way
for an imperial project that eventually rivals US hegemony.
-
Transatlantic Relations
Contrary to common wisdom, which differentiates the European tradition
of welfare states with the US model of unfettered market competition,
it is argued in this field that the post-war boom has brought about,
albeit unintentionally, an Atlantic capitalism where US Keynesianism
spurs economic growth and European mercantilism contains inflation
with its drive for export surpluses.
-
History of Social Movements
The relation between the constitution of social movements on the national
level and the global economy is the starting point of analysis in
this field. Particular attention is given to the transformation of
the New Left to different variants of New Labor in advanced capitalist
countries.
