Associate Director of Graduate Studies

Temple University of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education is a comprehensive public research university with more than 39,000 students. It has a distinguished faculty in 17 schools and colleges, including schools of Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, and Dentistry, and a renowned Health Sciences Center. Temple is one of Pennsylvania’s three public research universities, along with the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University. Temple University is the 26th-largest university in the United States, and it is the 6th-largest provider of professional education (law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, and podiatric medicine) in the country.

The Associate Director of Graduate Studies is a new position designed to facilitate the organizational development of the Department of Public Health as it continues to grow. The Associate Director of Graduate Studies will be responsible for providing key administrative management of the graduate programs within the Department of Public Health. This includes: MPH programs in Social and Behavioral Sciences, Health Policy/Global Health, Environmental Health, and Epidemiology/Biostatistics; dual MPH programs with medicine, law, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, social work, and podiatry; and an MS in Epidemiology. In addition to these programs that are fully accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH), the Department also has an accredited BS in Public Health and an accredited PhD with specializations in Social and Behavioral Sciences and Health Policy. The Associate Director of Graduate Studies will work with faculty Program Directors to maintain a quality curriculum that meets accreditation standards, as well as the evolving research and training needs of the public health workforce. The Associate Director will maintain day-to-day operations and management of the MPH degree programs and provide significant contributions to the development of new programs, including international articulation agreements and distance learning. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with faculty curriculum leaders to create appropriate sequencing and advising protocols.


  • Through the Executive Committee, coordinating with the doctoral and undergraduate programs and investigating new opportunities for professional training programs and articulation agreements.


  • Providing administrative support for the preparation of CEPH reports and visits.


  • Recruiting and providing routine academic advising of Master’s students.


  • Helping integrate efforts of the MPH Program Coordinator at Temple’s Harrisburg campus and the Fieldwork Coordinator.


  • Representing the Temple Public Health programs in interactions with other public health programs in Philadelphia and at meetings of professional/national organizations.


  • Teaching each semester, courses to be determined based on interests and expertise.


  • Participating in faculty and program committee meetings at both department and college levels.


  • Performing periodic QA/QC assessments, exit interviews, alumni surveys, and other record-keeping as related to CEPH accreditation requirements.


  • Developing innovative uses of technology to enhance classroom learning and program administration.

The MPH program at Temple University has been CEPH-accredited since 1985 and graduates about 35 students per year. Since 2008, the MS in Epidemiology, PhD, and BS have been fully accredited by CEPH. The Department of Public Health has 24 full-time faculty and numerous adjunct faculty from the community. Faculty have a diverse range of public health interests and research activities, including social and behavioral sciences, global health, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and health policy.

Appointment: The Associate Director of Graduate Studies position is an Instructor or Assistant Professor (depending on credentials) and is a 12-month non-tenure track faculty appointment within the Department of Public Health, which is housed in the College of Health Professions and Social Work. Salary is competitively set.

Requirements:

  • The Associate Director of Graduate Studies must have an MPH or MSPH from a CEPH-accredited program or school.


  • Minimum of three years of related experience is required.


  • Candidates with more advanced degrees (e.g., DrPH, PhD) are encouraged to apply.


  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in program management, organizational abilities, teaching, and excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to interact effectively with a variety of public health professionals.


  • The successful candidate will be familiar with academic program administration and accreditation procedures, as well as have a working knowledge of all the core areas of public health.


  • Familiarity with alternative educational formats (e.g., distance learning) is desirable.
